VoodooChild"It is, I suspect, a quietly growing uncertainty about orthodoxy across the entire institutional spectrum that is sustaining this process: a paradigm shift as fractious and contested as it is profound. And yet this pattern is as old as the hills: “systems prepare for their overthrow with a preliminary period of petrification” (Tawney 1922: XX). As systems defensively stiffen, sensing their imminent demise while refusing to acknowledge it, they lose the adroitness and easy authority with which they previously reacted to opposition. This lapse creates the space in which the new can begin to find coherent shape."

This sounds very much like the conditions Marx sets out for change in the Communist Manifesto. Is that intended?

SiteOwnerReply to VoodooChild’s comment of 07 January 2017, 16:22If it does, it's largely because Marx is the granddaddy of almost all critiques of capitalism. On the other hand, this is no manifesto, and I hope not a prescription of any kind. At risk of sounding hypocritical, I'd say I'm trying to be 'neutral', in that it doesn't matter what we call the system, every system dies in the end. One sign that a system's demise is imminent is its petrification. A small, generic, uncontroversial point in a larger whole that has been made by countless people across history.Saturday, 07 January 2017 at 18:36
VoodooChild"Further, if we do indeed inhabit a virtual reality as growing numbers of (digital) physicists are asserting, then what is “I”, what is “home”, what is “watching TV”, or a falling cannonball?"

This sentence jumped out at me. What's all this about a virtual reality? VR as in "we have internet lives" or something more Matrix-like?

VoodooChildReply to SiteOwner’s comment of 07 January 2017, 18:36Still one worth making, though, I think :)Sunday, 08 January 2017 at 20:39
SiteOwnerReply to VoodooChild’s comment of 08 January 2017, 20:39Like in the Matrix, but souls plug into this 'physical' reality, not biological bodies as in the film. And that you ask tells me I need to add material there, make that aspect clearer. I've spent so long studying this stuff I've lost site of what is and is not common knowledge...Monday, 09 January 2017 at 07:51
